The History: What is Pride Month?
Today, pride is a celebration of people coming together in love and friendship. But, the blissful event wasn’t always glitz and glamor—in fact, it started out quite the opposite. The Stonewall uprising is why you can dust off your rainbow flags, soak yourself in glitter, and get lit every June. The month honors those involved.
On June 28, 1969, the police spontaneously raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, New York. The raid resulted in staff, bar patrons, and neighborhood residents rioting outside on Christopher Street.
The protest would be led for six days by iconic trans, bisexual woman Masha P. Johnson, marking Stonewall as the catalyst for gay rights in the U.S.
The first Pride parade occurred in New York City in 1970. What started as marches on the last Sunday of June, known as Gay Pride Day, has fabulously transformed into an entire month, arguably the best glow-up of all time.
